What does error 691 mean when connecting to the Internet? Internet connection errors in Windows OS

The accessibility of the Internet directly relates to the growing popularity of various electronic devices. Therefore, there is no greater disappointment when a person has spent a considerable amount of money on purchasing the necessary equipment, and the message “error 691 when connecting to the Internet” appears before his eyes.

By the way, not a single user is immune from such a nuisance, no matter what provider he chooses. This is confirmed by a large number of similar requests for help: error 691 Beeline, Rostelecom, and so on.

Don’t get nervous ahead of time, since very often the reason that causes a connection failure can be treated quite easily.

Treatment methods

It may not be strange, but the first thing to do in such a situation is to check the account status. Especially often, such a surprise occurs among people who use monthly tariffs and simply forget about the date when they should make the next replenishment. The result is code 691 when connecting to the Internet in Windows 7 or in any other version of the operating system from the most famous manufacturer of such software.

The next reason why an unpleasant message appears when connecting to the Internet in Windows 8, 7, 10, etc. is that you entered personal data incorrectly. That is, login and password. Again, the solution may lie in setting the correct keyboard layout. For example, a person’s login is written in Russian letters, but should be written in English.

Problems when trying to connect via PPPoE may be caused by incorrect VPN server settings. What does it mean that an error occurs already at the first stage of the process being launched.

The fix is this:

  1. Go to the “Network Connections” menu.
  2. Find the created connection and open the submenu by right-clicking on the mouse.
  3. Go to the “Properties” folder.
  4. Double-check the correctness of all data entered there.

The last option for such error 691 to occur may be the firewall not working for some reason. Therefore, before trying to access the vastness of the global web, it is recommended to check the functionality of this application, which is also very easy to do:

  1. Go to the control panel, from where you go to the “Services” menu.
  2. You need to find the application and launch its settings.
  3. Find the “status” line and enable this important program.
  4. Try to go online.

Usually these options are quite enough to cope with error 691, a seemingly complex and irreparable situation.

While connecting to the Internet, many users encounter an error number 691. What does it mean and what should a Windows 7 and 10 client do to make it disappear?

What does error 691 mean and why does it occur?

The window with error number 691 always contains its description. The system explains that it is denying the user an Internet connection because the specified login and password could not be recognized, or because the selected authentication protocol is not allowed on the server. Simply put, the Windows client entered incorrect data at the authorization stage. This is the most common reason for this error to occur.

In the window with error message 691, the system notifies that it cannot provide access to the Internet due to an incorrectly entered login and password.

What other explanations are there?

  1. The modem or router is not working properly.
  2. The specified IP address for establishing a VPN connection is incorrect.
  3. Connection to another network under the current account, which was previously performed by the user.
  4. Problems with the network on the part of the provider. The failure may not happen on the user's side. In this case, you need to wait until the provider solves the problem itself.
  5. Blocking the connection with Windows Defender Firewall.
  6. Lack of funds in the Internet user's account. This reason is not so common, since often in this case, when loading a site in the browser, a message appears from the provider about the need to top up your account in order to further use its services.

How to solve error 691 on Windows 7 and Windows 10

Since there are many reasons why error number 691 appears, there are also different methods for getting rid of it. Let's look at each of them in detail.

Checking the correctness of the login and password

Often, error 691 appears when a network client specifies incorrect login data (incorrect login and password). It doesn’t matter whether you logged into your account for the first time or not. Perhaps the data got lost for some reason. In this case, you need to re-enter them. The login and password can be found in the agreement with your provider.

When entering a password, be sure to check that the CapsLock button on the keyboard is disabled. In addition, you need to pay attention to the case: the system distinguishes between lowercase and capital letters. Also, do not put a space between characters and make sure that the desired input language is installed.

When re-entering your login and password, carefully watch the case

Any text editor, for example, Notepad, will help you enter everything correctly. Type the characters into it, and then simply copy and paste the combinations into the corresponding two fields to enter. This advice is especially relevant for clients of the Rostelecom provider, which comes up with complex passwords for users.

Balance check

Your agreement with the provider must contain information for logging into your “Personal Account” on its official website. If you don't have internet, you can still open it successfully. Log in using your username and password and check your current balance. If it is negative, we replenish it in any convenient way. After this, Internet access will resume. If you are unable to log into your “Personal Account”, you can call your provider and find out the current amount of money in your account by calling the number by which you are replenishing it.

Rebooting the equipment

Any device can malfunction from time to time. A modem or router is no exception to this rule. Try rebooting it. To do this, turn it off for 30 – 60 seconds using the power button, which is usually located on the back of the router, and then turn it back on and wait until it boots up completely. Try connecting to the network again.

Checking the Windows Firewall

The standard Windows Defender Firewall application can be the culprit for error 691. In particular, a failure when connecting to the Internet occurs if the specified service is suddenly disabled for one reason or another. In this case, you need to reactivate it and configure it to start automatically:

Error 691 may also be caused by Windows Firewall blocking the connection. To see if this is the problem, disable it temporarily:

  1. In the “Control Panel”, which can be found through “Windows Search” (a magnifying glass icon), click on the “Network and Sharing Center” item.

Open the "Network and Sharing Center" section

  2. In the lower left corner, find the link for Windows Defender and click on it.
  3. We turn our attention again to the left side of the window, where we look for the item “Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off.”

Click on "Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off"

  4. Depending on what type of network you are using (private or public), select the block in which you will disable the option to ensure security.

Disable Windows Defender using the option for private or public network

  5. Check the box next to the disable option. Click on OK and try to connect to the problematic network.

Temporarily disabling the antivirus

Windows Defender is not the only one that can block network connections. The “culprit” of error 691 can also be an antivirus that tries to protect your computer from malware. He can consider the files responsible for connecting to the network to be viral and put them in the so-called quarantine, that is, isolate them from all other documents. If this is the reason, you must also disable the antivirus for a while and try to gain access to the network. The error 691 window may no longer appear. After this, do not forget to turn on the anti-virus software again and add processes related to connecting to the World Wide Web to the exception.

Let's look at the shutdown using the Avast program as an example:

Update network card drivers

The cause of error 691 can be not only an incorrect login or password, but also outdated network card drivers. They need to be updated. If you have a desktop computer, you need to download the update from the official website of your motherboard. If you have a laptop, go to its manufacturer's resource.

Let's look at downloading and installing a network card driver update using the example of a laptop from Asus:

  1. We will load the drivers here. Go to it and enter your laptop model.

Write the model name of your laptop

  2. Find the desired model in the list and click on the “Support” link with the left button.

Select your model from the list and click on “Support”

  3. Now go to the first tab “Drivers and Utilities”.

In the “Drivers and Utilities” tab, select your OS

  4. Select your operating system from the drop-down menu.
  5. In the list of available drivers we find LAN. This is the required network card driver. Click on “Download”.

Find the LAN network card driver

  6. Launch the downloaded archive and double-click the file called setup.exe.

Open the setup file in the downloaded archive

  7. In the InstallShiled Wizard window, select the second option “Fix” to reinstall all program components. Click on “Next”.

Check the “Fix” option and click on “Next”

  8. Wait while the installation wizard fixes any problems.

Please wait until problems are resolved

  9. After this, the new components will be installed.
  10. As a result, a message indicating the completion of the operation will appear in the window. Here we click on the “Done” button.

Click on "Done" to close the window

  11. We reboot the computer for all changes to take effect and try to connect to our network again.

An easier way to install the update is through a standard Windows window called “Device Manager”. How to open it and what to do in it?

  1. We find the “Device Manager” service through “Search” - a panel that is launched through the “magnifying glass” icon to the right of the “Start” button.
  2. Enter the appropriate query and open the window with one click on the item in the search results.

Find the Device Manager service through Windows Search.

  3. In a large list we look for the “Network adapters” object. Open it by double-clicking with the left mouse button.
  4. Select one of the drivers with the right button and click on “Update driver”. You do not have to download the update for the Bluetooth item, as well as Wireless, if you do not use Wi-Fi, but cable Internet.

    Click on “Update Driver”

  5. In the new window, click on “Automatically search for updated drivers” or on “Search for drivers on this computer” if you have already downloaded the required update for the network card using the previous method. After this, you will be prompted to specify the path to the update file. Then the installation will begin.

Select one of the links provided

  6. If you selected the first link, wait while the system searches the network for available updates.
  7. If the update is not found, the system will notify you that new drivers have been installed on the computer.

The system will inform you if the driver does not need updates

  8. If there are updates, the OS itself will download and install them.
  9. Repeat the procedure for all remaining drivers in the list of the “Network adapters” item.

Create a new connection

If all the previous methods do not work, try creating a new connection. Use the following instructions for this:

  1. First, launch Control Panel. To do this, hold down the Win + R combination on the keyboard and type the control code in the window. Execute the command using the OK button or the Enter key.

Write the control command and click OK

  2. Go to the “Network and Internet” section.

Depending on the device used for connection, select high speed or dial-up type

  3. We print the password and login for the network, which are specified in your agreement with the provider. If you want to see the characters you enter in the Password field, check the box to the left of “Display characters you enter.” You can also enable password saving.
  4. Also check the box below if you want to allow other users of this PC to use your connection.
  5. Click on “Connect”. We check if there is access to the Internet.

Call the provider's support service

If none of these methods solve the problem or you are unable to use them, call your provider's support line and explain the problem you are experiencing. Be sure to report the error number to the operator. If the problem is on the provider's side, you will be notified about it immediately. You also have the right to find out how long the problem will be fixed. If it is not the provider’s fault, the specialist will clearly explain to you how to correct the situation and gain access to the Internet again.

Error 691 most often occurs due to the fact that the Windows client entered incorrect login information (login or username and password). You need to re-write them, but more carefully: you need to pay attention to the case, as well as the input language and the CapsLock key. You can also solve the problem by temporarily disabling Windows Defender and the antivirus installed on your PC. If this does not help, update your network card drivers and create a new connection.

Many users sometimes encounter errors when connecting to the Internet. This may be caused by problems on a specific computer or malfunctions on the ISP side. The error number allows you to find out the cause and find a solution without the help of operator specialists.

The most common mistakes

There can be quite a lot of them. Most of them are related to incorrect user settings. Most often, subscribers of providers encounter the following errors: 691, 678, 619, 769, 800. Each of them has different reasons. At the same time, many can be eliminated with your own hands, without turning to your provider for help.

Important! If you cannot solve the problem yourself, you need to call technical support.

Error 691

Perhaps the most common Internet connection error is 691, which indicates that the password is incorrect. It appears at the stage of checking registration data. Simply put, the error means that the provider's server was unable to correctly identify the user, or he was denied access to the network.

Causes of error 691 and solutions

In fact, error 691 when connecting can occur due to a fairly large number of reasons. Among them:

  • the username or password is entered incorrectly;
  • negative balance;
  • The login is already authorized on the server.

Very often, when creating a new connection, users experience error 691 due to an incorrect login or password. In order to avoid this problem, it is recommended to first type the registration data in a notepad and copy it into the authorization window.

A negative balance with a number of telecom operators also leads to error 691 appearing on the user’s screen. The problem in this case can be solved simply by checking and topping up the account if necessary. Many providers allow you to log into your personal account without authorization on the server, and for some you will have to call technical support.

When trying to turn on the Internet, error 691 is given to the user, also provided that the previous session has not been closed. This happens quite rarely when disconnected from the Internet incorrectly. Just wait 5-10 minutes and connect again. If the connection continues to occur, then you should call technical support operators.

Important! In Windows 7, connection error 691 is not always shown. Very often, code 692 appears instead. Therefore, if an error message appears while checking your username and password, you should also follow the steps described above.

Error 678/651/815

Error 691, as mentioned earlier, is far from the only one that users encounter when trying to connect to the Internet. Another common problem involves the server not responding. The error code may differ in different versions of the operating system. In Windows XP it will be 678, in Vista it will be 815, and Windows 7 users will see a message with error number 651.

Causes of error 678/651/815 and its elimination

Error 678/651/815 has a huge number of possible causes. Among them:

  • cable break;
  • problems with the provider;
  • errors in the firewall or antivirus;
  • Incorrect configuration of the subscriber device.

If error 691 in most cases can be resolved independently, then when a message with code 678/651/815 appears, the user can only disable antiviruses and firewalls, and also check the cable inside the apartment and the subscriber device (router, optical terminal or modem) if present .

Important! Carefully check whether it is connected to the computer. This elementary thing is the most common cause of errors 678/651/815.

Error 619

The technology for connecting subscribers differs slightly between different providers. The reasons for the appearance depend on this

Users connecting using PPPoE can usually detect it due to insufficient balance or incorrect username and password. This type of connection is typical for the following operators: Rostelecom, Dom.ru and a number of others.

Subscribers using a mobile Internet connection via 3G/4G provided by cellular operators may see a message with code 619 due to problems with the USB modem or computer port. In this case, you may be advised to connect the device to a different connector and reinstall the drivers.

Clients of some networks connect to the Internet through a VPN. In this case, error 619 reports incorrect security settings. In the properties of the Internet connection on the “Security” tab, you must set the “Used during verification” option to the “Secure password” position. This type of connection is used, for example, by home Internet subscribers from Beeline.

Error 769/800

Windows XP users who have problems with drivers or local network connections will not receive a message with code 769, and those who have Vista installed will receive a message with code 800.
First of all, you need to check that your local network connection is active. This can be done in the Start menu in the Network Neighborhood section, selecting Show network connections or by accessing the Network and Sharing Center. If the local connection icon is gray, then you need to enable it using

If there is no local network connection, then the problem lies with the drivers. They must be reinstalled from the included disc or downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

Other errors

When connecting to the Internet, users may receive messages about other types of errors, but they are quite rare. It is quite difficult or even impossible for the user to eliminate some of them without the help of a specialist.

Let's look at other errors that often appear when connecting to the Internet, and ways to solve them:

  • means the PPPoE protocol has been completed. As a solution, you can try to recreate the connection.
  • Error 735 means that an incorrect IP address is being used to connect. In the settings, you must indicate that the network address should be obtained automatically, or enter the correct parameters from the agreement with the provider.

In any case, if you cannot fix the problem yourself, you need to call technical support. A company specialist will suggest possible causes of errors and ways to eliminate them. And if necessary, he will also submit a request for installers to visit you.

Good afternoon, dear readers and guests of the blog, we continue our study of network technologies based on the Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system. Today I want to add to our knowledge base regarding all kinds of errors connecting to a VPN server, and today you will find out the reasons for the occurrence errors 691 and event code 13 in NPS magazine. Let's see how this whole matter is solved and diagnosed.

What does error 691 mean?

And so there are users who have the Windows 8.1 or 10 operating system installed on the client machine; when connecting to the VPN server, the user receives this message:

Error 691: The remote connection was refused because the specified username/password combination could not be recognized or the selected authentication protocol is not allowed on the remote access server

Reasons for the error

Let's look at the main reasons for this problem:

  • If we are talking about connecting to an Internet provider, so that through this connection, then make sure that you do not have an account for the position
  • Correctness of the entered data
  • Incorrect settings in the VPN connection
  • Blocking by an antivirus product or on your firewall (router)
  • Server side errors

Let's now look at everything in more detail for each of the reasons.

How to fix error 691

  • And so, if the connection goes to the provider, then you need to check the balance, there are several options, either some kind of personal account (for example, look from a mobile phone), or call technical support and clarify
  • If there are no blocks on your personal account, then the most common mistake is incorrect credentials or the wrong connection method was selected, I’ll tell you in more detail here.

If you created a VPN connection a long time ago, this does not mean that you do not need to check this item, for the sole reason that the settings on the server side may have changed, and the fact that you may have missed this news is your problem. Go to the official website or call technical support and clarify all the data:

  1. Server address
  2. Connection protocol
  3. Authentication method
  4. Ports

Then go to the properties of your network connection, to do this, press Win+r and in the Run window write ncpa.cpl

As a result, the “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center” window will open, here you can detect all your VPN connections. Go to "Change adapter settings"

As a result, here you need to find your VPN connection.

Make sure you are using the correct connection protocol, we have already caught the 806 error because of it. Go to the connection properties, right-click and go to the “General” tab and check that the server address is correct.

Very often I have seen connection failure with error 691 in windows 7 precisely because of the wrong protocol type in the Security tab and make sure the authentication method is correct.

We bring all settings into proper form, and in accordance with the requirements of the provider or service provider. Save and try to connect.

  • Now let's look at errors from the VPN server itself. I had exactly this case. I'll describe the scheme. There is a virtual machine with microtik and it works as a gateway and VPN server, which, for authentication, accesses the radius server, which has an Active Directory database, through which it sees who came to it. And it was precisely in this connection that there were problems; on the server I saw the following error;

The RADIUS message was received from an invalid RADIUS client IP address 10.152.1.100. With event code 13

Essentially, the NPS server rejected the user when trying to connect to it and gave him error 691. There are several reasons for this, and almost all of them were on Mikrotik’s side. What you need to check on it:

  1. Shared secret key
  2. Connection protocol
  3. Ports

On the NPS server side and radius settings, check that NPS is registered in Active Directory, if not, do so.

A window will pop up confirming your operation.

Also on the Network Policy Server, make sure that in the connection radius properties you can check the dns name or IP address of the VPN server

You should not have the error “This host is unknown” when checking, which is why you get the error “The RADIUS message was received from an invalid client IP address”

  • And also make sure that your ports are not blocked, both on the server side and on the client side, an example would be routers that cut GRE packets or Kaspersky anti-virus, if you have NPS installed, then its ports can be viewed in the server properties. For me it is 1812, 1645 are the authentication ports, 1813, 1646 are the credentials ports.

Many users have had to deal with Internet connection problems. For convenience, each of these errors has its own numerical designation. Check out the most popular ones.

Error 651

Occurs most often. The system notifies you of a problem with this message.

Appears due to a malfunction of network equipment, which can be caused by a variety of factors.

For treatment we work in this sequence.

First step. Checking the connection of the Internet cables. Let's reconnect them.

Second step. We reboot the network equipment if it is used. It is enough to unplug the router (modem) from the outlet and plug it back in.

Third step. We re-make the PPPoE connection manually or use a special utility from Microsoft for this - Rasphone. To do this, press Win+R and enter the command rasphone.exe in the appropriate field.

If you see the error in question the first time you use a newly created connection, make sure that the settings you entered are correct. Most often, the error appears due to an incorrect VPN server. Double-check and correct any inaccuracies.

If the problem appears after installing a new antivirus software or firewall, make sure that the utility you are using is not blocking access to the network.

If all else fails, call the support service of your Internet provider. Most likely, there are problems on their part. Try going into 192.168.0.1 and disconnecting everyone connected to your Wi-Fi router.

Error 691

Most often it appears due to an incorrect login and/or password for connecting to the network.

The following factors can also cause an error to occur:
incorrectly entered server address;
invalid IP;
Incorrect security settings.

Accordingly, for treatment, do the following:
1. Make sure you entered your password and login correctly.
2. Check the reliability of the VPN server and IP. Open Start, go to the Network connections section, right-click on the connection shortcut and go to Properties. The entered data must match those provided by the provider.
3. Check your security settings. In the same Properties tab, select Settings, and then Dialing Options. If the line “Include Windows logon domain” is active, uncheck the box.

If all else fails, call your provider's support - the problem may be on their side.

Error 678

The problem occurs when there is no response from the VPN server.

To cure it, we do the following:
1. Check that the firewall or antivirus (if present) is not blocking the connection to the network.
2. Enable the network adapter in the Device Manager section.
3. Check that the Internet cable is properly inserted into the connector.
4. Reinstall the Internet card drivers.
5. We call the provider and find out if there are any problems on their part.

Looks like that:

Appears due to:
incorrect security settings;
inaccuracies in VPN connection settings;
blocking traffic with other applications (antivirus, firewall).

First step. Let's go to Start.

Second step. Launch the Control Panel.

Third step. Go to the Network connections section. Let's examine the status of our connection shortcut. Specifically, look at what is written in parentheses next to the WAN miniport - PPTP/L2TP or PPPoE.

If it says PPPoE, do the following:
right-click on the connection shortcut;
go to Properties;
select the Security tab. Set it up like this:

If you are using a VPN connection, repeat the sequence until you get to the Security section. Here we deactivate the line “Require data encryption”.

Sometimes this error also appears among modem owners when the computer cannot detect the USB device.

First step. Go to the Control Panel.

Second step. Open the System category.

Third step. Go to the Equipment section.

Fourth step. In the Device Manager, look to see if there are any warning notifications like yellow and red icons near our equipment? If so, reboot. Nothing changed? Plug the modem into another USB port. If there are no changes in this case, we test the modem on another laptop or computer. Does not work? We contact the modem supplier.

Error 868

Appears in situations where the computer is unable to connect to the VPN server.

To fix the problem, first check whether the connection is active. We work in this order.

First step. Go to Start, and then to Control Panel.

Second step. Let's go to the Network and Internet (the name may vary in different OS modifications, be guided by the situation).

Third step. Let's go here.

Fourth step. Click Change adapter settings.

Fifth step. Click on the connection icon and click Enable.

If the connection was already enabled, check whether the VPN server is entered correctly. To do this, open the properties of our connection and study the information entered in the General section. We check the data provided by the provider. If the problem cannot be resolved, the problem is most likely on the provider's side. Contact customer support.

Error 720

This problem occurs when the client's computer is unable to connect to the service provider's server for some reason.

There are 3 main methods to solve the problem.

First way- OS recovery. Click Start and open the Accessories category in the list of programs. There we go to the System Tools section and enable System Restore. Select one of the previously created restore points. If it doesn't help, use the following method.

Second way– reset settings to initial ones. Click Start and enter cmd. The system will open the console. We write netsh winsock reset and press Enter.
Let's reboot. No positive changes? We use the following method.

Third way– reset IP settings. Open the console (the procedure is described above) and write netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
We are trying to connect to the Internet. If this also does not help, call your provider.

Now you know why basic Internet connection errors appear and how to deal with them.
