Price: on TinyDeal for version 2/16 - $299 (18 thousand rubles), prices on Yandex.Market Well, the specifications are actually flagship. Which is not often found in smartphones with a 5" display, but there are many people who love phones with a relatively small display. (I'm not one of them, however.) However, only one SIM card attracts attention, and even lack of memory card support is somehow completely uncharacteristic for Chinese manufacturers. By the way, this version arrived without 4G (LTE) support, but there are models with 4G support on the market (including for Russia). Contents of delivery A traditional Xiaomi box made of recycled cardboard in the style of “Why do you need a beautiful box?” But everything inside is at least somehow packaged, and not lying around, as happens with some manufacturers. The kit is the simplest: smartphone, USB-microUSB cable, power adapter (they either stick the European adapter with tape to the box, as I did with the Xiaomi Mi Pad tablet, or simply attach it separately, as was the case here), a clip for the SIM slot -map and brochures.
Appearance and features There are no frills or highlights in the design of the smartphone, but it looks quite good: high-quality white glossy plastic, metal ends with cut chamfers. One of the journalists wrote that Mi4 supposedly resembles iPhone 5 - in my opinion, nothing in common. Here's the iPhone 5s. And what? Are the ends metal? So, a lot of smartphones have metal ones. The back cover of Mi4 is glossy white plastic. Considering the fact that the lid is non-removable, everything fits perfectly here: nothing creaks or cracks anywhere. But we pay for this with a non-removable battery, no memory card and no second SIM card. This is an expensive price, in my opinion, it would be better if the lid crackled, but there were two more slots. (Moreover, even with a non-removable cover, people manage to get out of the situation, like, for example, Huawei, in whose smartphones you can now choose to install a second SIM card or a memory card.) On the left side there is a slot for a SIM card. Pulls out with a paper clip. The top end is a headset output, an infrared port (so that the smartphone can operate as a universal control panel).
The right side has a volume rocker and a power button.
The bottom end has a speaker (a microphone is also hidden there), and a microUSB output.
Control is carried out using touch buttons located under the screen. The buttons are marked - these are “menu”, “home” and “return”; they can also be illuminated during operation (the duration of the illumination can be set). You can set a specific action for a long press of each button. Here is this smartphone next to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
The phone makes a very decent impression: it looks good, fits quite comfortably in the hand, which is also facilitated by its relatively small size. Display It uses an IPS-LCD display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, made using OGS technology and having 441 pixels per inch. The display is covered with tempered protective glass, the manufacturer of which is not named. The glass is scratch-resistant, has an oleophobic coating and an anti-glare filter. Viewing angles are very good, image quality is almost excellent. By the way, here you can adjust the color temperature. The brightness margin is good: in normal daylight I set it to 50%. In direct sunlight the image remains quite visible. Automatic brightness adjustment works very, very crookedly: it either does not react at all to changes in lighting conditions, or sets some unacceptable values. However, this happens quite often in Android phones. In general, I really liked the display. Firmware installation Interestingly, a smartphone came to me from China with some kind of crooked version of MIUI, where the exposed Russian interface was reproduced with spaces between any letters (that is, all words became twice as long), so you can imagine what kind of pornography came out of it - I didn’t have the slightest desire to take screenshots of such crookedness. However, Xiaomi has built-in MI-Recovery: you can turn off the phone, then turn it on while holding the power button and volume up, and the corresponding program will launch.

There you select English.

In the menu that appears there is an item "Install update.zip to System". That is, all you have to do is get the desired firmware, throw it into the root folder of the phone, then turn it off, turn it on in Mi-Recovery and reflash it. I chose the firmware. I didn't find the right one right away. First I installed Cyanogenmod - the one I found turned out to be terribly crooked. Then I decided to install Miui after all: the first two simply did not install. In the end, I found a very nice MIUI 5.9.13 firmware - so it installed without problems.

Device operation

This is a modification of MIUI, so there is no separate application window here.

Main desktop.

MIUI users can register an appropriate account on account.xiaomi.com, after which they will have access to a cloud service (up to 5 GB), in which they can automatically save contacts, messages, photos, calls, notes, Wi-Fi settings, clock settings, voice recorder entries, calendar entries, browser data, blacklists, music, applications and search history. Telephone Incoming call - the image is displayed on the entire screen.

Talk mode - the image disappears for some reason. It is possible to record a conversation.

Audibility is good, there were no complaints about the quality. There is noise reduction here, the second microphone is located above the camera, but I didn’t like the result of this system too much - I’ve seen better noise reduction. Mobile Internet showed high speed for these testing conditions.

The Wi-Fi speed for my home network was also completely normal.

Audio The sound of the built-in speaker is good. Quite loud, without crackling or wheezing, there are even some hints of bass. In-ear headphones ( Huawei Ultimo Power ANC Earphone) - very good: there is some volume, the bass is decent for this type of “ear”, the highs could be cleaner. But in general, you can listen to music.Headphones-ear pads ( Plantronics BackBeat Pro in wired mode) - not enough bass, a little flat and I would like the highs to be much clearer.Headphones with an OMTP connector (Philips SHPI800) - decent highs, the sound is flat, the bass is somewhere completely behind.

In general, this smartphone will not handle high-quality music (although it depends on the headphones used), but it is suitable for all other audio tasks. In any case, I would trust Bilan to him. Video This smartphone plays 4K video without any problems even on a software decoder.
Accordingly, videos of any other resolutions run without any problems. GPS

It picks up satellites very quickly, determines coordinates stably, and does not fly off the road when navigating. Games

The hardware here is good, it allows you to comfortably play any Android games, including 3D games. Asphalt 8 was set to maximum quality settings. By the way, what is important is that even during this game the back cover of the smartphone - a common problem with productive systems - practically did not heat up. Settings

Now let's look at sample pictures. (Clickable, when clicked, options open 1920 pixels wide.)

Selfie example - with default settings. By the way, in addition to the usual face blurring mode, there is also a wrinkle removal mode. The camera also tries to determine how old the face in the frame is. She generously gave me 29 years old - she was not much mistaken. Well, I should also add that the camera has a QR code detection mode. It works so-so, but it might come in handy somewhere. Two video examples. The first is with FullHD resolution, the second is with 4K resolution.

Well what can I say? In my opinion, the camera is very decent. It shoots sharply, the colors are natural, the white balance in the machine behaves tolerably, it rarely misses focusing (especially since there is a mode for focusing and shooting by touching the screen). It also shoots video well, although it lacks a stabilizer. (However, I have not yet seen effective video stabilizers in smartphones.) Compare, for example, with the Elephone P7000 - the camera there is noticeably worse. System and performance

AnTuTu Benchmark gave this smartphone a score of 45,569, which means it is among the top ten best performing smartphones. I had no complaints about the speed of the smartphone: it doesn’t lag, it works smoothly and quickly. Battery life
Qualcomm's fast charging feature is supported here. Quick Charge charges a completely discharged smartphone to 80% in about 45 minutes. It charged from 0 to 100% from its own adapter in just under two hours. The declared battery capacity is 3080 mAh. The tests showed the same thing. Test modes. (In tests, automatic brightness adjustment, as I usually do, was disabled.) Internet. The brightness is set to a comfortable 50%, all wireless networks are turned on, and the page in the browser is refreshed every 30 seconds. 9 hours 30 minutes. Quite decent. Wireless communications are turned off, the brightness is set to a comfortable 50%, and a video of the series is playing in a loop in MK Player. Almost the same as in the previous test - 9 hours 15 minutes. (I thought there would be more.) Under almost normal load, the smartphone normally survived until the evening, and there was about 30-40% of the charge left. It barely survived two days in my mode of use. In the most active mode (navigation, Internet, calls, messenger, a lot of photos), the battery lasted for about 5 hours. This is completely normal. So over time, there are no records of battery life, but the indicators are at the expected level. Observations during operation and conclusions Apart from glitches with the firmware with which the phone arrived from the TinyDeal store (a similar story, by the way, was with the Xiaomi Mi Pad tablet, which came from the European Amazon), after installing the normal firmware there were no more problems. The smartphone worked very stable, no complaints there were none. There was even practically no heating when using “heavy” applications, and this problem, as I already said, is observed in many high-end smartphones. In general, I clearly liked the phone, although I am not yet a particular fan of the brand itself. But here we have truly flagship characteristics - in almost all components - and in a device with a relatively small display size. Many users complain that if they do not like 5.5-6" displays, then they cannot really find a smartphone with good characteristics , because, they say, small phones usually have very modest parameters. And just in this case - a very productive device with flagship parameters, and even the camera is good - I was afraid that there would be problems with the camera. Yes, the smartphone costs under $300, and not $150, but this is quite consistent with the installed hardware. (How much do Sony want for their Xperia Compact 5, which is 4.4" with HD resolution? $620? Well, well...) By the way, if using 4G (LTE) is important to you. ) - look for a model that supports Russian frequencies, these are produced. There is also a model with 4G for Russia, and the phone supports two SIM cards - it is called Xiaomi Mi4i. P.S. From the TinyDeal store, the discount coupon for this smartphone is 2GXMM48off. Valid through September 30th, price will be $275.99.

Lately, the policies of some Chinese companies have been looking strange. So relatively recently Xiaomi presented a very interesting smartphone Mi4i. The new device differs from the original Mi4 device, which has been on sale for quite a long time, by the letter “i” in the name and some slightly simplified specifications. Let's figure out what's what.

Firstly, it is worth saying that a sufficient period of time has passed between the release of the two smartphones in question. Xiaomi Mi4 was introduced in July 2014, while the smartphone with the “i” index was released in April of this year.

The second issue that is worth discussing right away is prices.

You can buy it in the official store Xiaomi Mi4 price at 1,990 Chinese yuan, which translated into native currency is exactly 18,250 rubles for the 16 GB modification. However, domestic, and any other users (with the exception of Chinese) need not worry. It is impossible to buy something directly from the manufacturer due to the fact that international buyers do not have Chinese bank cards and a local address.

It’s interesting that for the newest model with the “i” index, at the moment the official store has not even posted prices. Thus, the official channel is completely unavailable.

There is only one option left, and it is far from the worst - to purchase gadgets from sellers of various Chinese sellers. One such good example is the Gearbest.com store. Link Xiaomi Mi4i Can buy for $237.52.

However, at the moment our partner is running a promotion, thanks to which you can buy a smartphone significantly cheaper:

  • When the device is delivered from a European warehouse and activated during checkout with an EUMI4I coupon, the price will be reduced to $194.59
  • and when ordering from a Hong Kong warehouse, you need to specify another coupon - XMM4IGB, but the cost will be just as low - $194.59.

In general, choose the place of delivery and seize the moment while the discount is valid.

We've sorted out the key parameters. Let's get to the main point comparison.

Now it will become clear why at the beginning of the article we talked about simplified characteristics in the new product. The predecessor (Xiaomi Mi4) basically has a metal edging and beautiful metal bevels on the sides, much like the iPhone 5S. There is glass on the front, just like in Mi4i. Both devices have a plastic back cover. The only difference is that the older device has a glossy cover, while the new product has a slightly velvety, matte surface.

It's time to look at the technical characteristics of the devices by comparing them with each other. I warn you in advance that I marked improvements in hardware in green, and deterioration in red. It is clear that the latter are most numerous.

As for performance, it is approximately the same. On both devices you can easily play modern games even at high graphics settings. It's hard to notice much of a difference.

In real-life use, of course, it is useful to have 3 GB in a regular version rather than 2 GB in an updated one. However, this indicator will be critical for those who do not like to unload unnecessary applications from memory and keep 10 tabs open in the browser at the same time.

Xiaomi Mi4 internals

Xiaomi Mi4i internals

None of the models we are discussing are equipped with an NFC interface. Still, we are not dealing with flagships, but according to tradition, only they are armed with similar gadgets. By the way, about them. Only the older version is equipped with a built-in IR port for controlling household appliances. The new product can’t do anything like that.

There is no point in discussing smaller changes. Everything can be seen in the plate above.

Let's talk a little about the camera. The differences between the rear photosensors are small. The young smartphone still has the same 13 megapixels, but the lens has undergone changes. There are now 5 lenses instead of 6, and the aperture has increased to f/2.0. In other words, a little less light will enter the matrix, but in theory these differences are almost invisible.

There are differences in video recording. In Mi4 these can be videos with Ultra HD resolution, while Mi4i users will be content with only Full HD videos.

Let's move on to the most pressing issue. It is clear that many users will and do order smartphones from Chinese stores; in the case of Xiaomi products, there is no other way (with the exception of tablets). In this case, it will be useful to know the supported frequencies, so that when installing your own SIM card you will not be left with nothing.

For Xiaomi Mi4i, which can be purchased from the link above, it is valid support following network frequencies LTE: FDD-LTE 1800 / 2600 MHz. To check the supported frequencies of a specific smartphone and your operator, you can use the service.

Let's summarize briefly. Even based on the materials used, we can conclude that the devices are positioned differently. They are largely similar in functionality and performance, but the older version is still more expensive than the younger one. And the color of the latter hints that the manufacturer has relied on young people, hence the more affordable price for the device. Perhaps there really is no point in overpaying for a one-year-old model and choosing the Xiaomi Mi4i.

Chinese smartphone manufacturers are developing at a frantic pace and are actively winning market share from A-brands, primarily due to humane prices. In this matter, it is already worth dividing Chinese manufacturers among themselves: there are a huge number of less well-known brands a la iOcean, THL, there are those working on OEM and ODM conditions (their models can be seen both under local Chinese and Ukrainian and Russian names). Eg Yulong (Coolpad brand) or K-Touch. A separate class are companies that have already proven themselves in the global market, such as Huawei, Lenovo, Meizu and Xiaomi. The latter, according to recent data, now ranks third in the world in smartphone shipments. This information was announced a few days before the final takeover of Motorola by Lenovo, so formally the situation could have changed in Lenovo's favor, but this is not so important. It's impressive that since its inception in 2010, the company has evolved from the creator of the MIUI shell for Android into such a large smartphone manufacturer. And today we are reviewing the flagship Xiaomi smartphone - the Mi4 model.

What is this?

Xiaomi Mi4 is the company's top smartphone. When it was announced in July, Xiaomi proudly called it the “most powerful smartphone available” (of course). Compared to the previous flagship Mi3 (which still looks good in terms of characteristics), the design has changed significantly and the power has increased.

Why is he interesting?

The smartphone is interesting due to one of the most powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (8974AC) processors with a clock frequency of 2.5 GHz (four Krait 400 cores) and graphics Adreno 330 with a frequency of 578 MHz, which is in total with 3 GB of RAM should provide high performance. In addition to the internal goodies, a high-quality 5-inch IPS screen with FullHD resolution of Japanese origin (Sharp or JDI) with protective Gorilla Glass 3 and increased sensitivity. The camera module is Sony Exmor RS IMX214 with a resolution of 13 megapixels and the ability to record video in 4K resolution at 30 frames per second.

What is in the box?

The smartphone comes in a box made of yellowish cardboard, inside which there is the smartphone itself, a USB cable, a charger, an adapter for European sockets, a clip for removing the SIM card and all sorts of warranty instructions.

What does it look like?

The design of the smartphone cannot be called original; it resembles a large number of other models, many compare it with the 5th generation iPhone. The main similarity is the use of a metal frame; in the renderings, the smartphones are really similar. When we met in person, the impression changed for the better; the smartphone does not look like a copy of anything. The Mi4 does have very thin bezels on the sides of the screen, making it one of the narrowest smartphones with a screen of this size. The frame is made of high-quality metal with bevels. The smartphone cannot boast of a record thin body: the thickness is 8.9 mm. I don’t see anything wrong with this, on the contrary: the thickness and width of the gadget facilitate convenient use, including with one hand, which is important.

On the front panel above the screen there is a front camera, a set of sensors, an earpiece and the Mi logo. Below the screen there are three standard touch buttons, just below there is a small LED indicator for notifications. Unfortunately, it was not possible to photograph it: it blinks with short signals, the color can be adjusted:

At the top end there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and an IR transmitter for controlling household appliances:

On the left side there is a tray for a MicroSIM card. It fits perfectly, does not stick out and is not skewed, as sometimes happens:

At the bottom there is a MicroUSB and a single speaker grid. It is placed in the same way as in my LG G2, but it sounds much louder and better quality:

On the right is the volume rocker, lower - power button. As with the MicroSIM tray, the buttons fit perfectly. They do not wobble, can be felt and pressed well:

The back panel is made of thick plastic, it does not bend or creak. It has a glossy transparent layer, under which there is a small, diamond-shaped pattern. It collects prints, but due to the small pattern and white color they are practically invisible. At the top there is a camera with flash and a small microphone hole, at the bottom - logo. Xiaomi has decided to adopt the Moto X feature and plans to produce interchangeable back covers of different colors and textures. Accordingly, the back cover is removable. Despite this, the existing lid sits in place perfectly, as in non-removable devices:

Main camera with single LED flash:

Together with Xiaomi MiPad:

The smartphone is well assembled and fits comfortably in the hand, thanks to its convenient dimensions and nice metal frame.

How is his screen?

As mentioned above, there is a 5-inch IPS screen with FullHD resolution manufactured by Sharp or JDI with protective glass Gorilla Glass 3. The screen has no air gap and is manufactured using LTPS (Low Temperature Poly Silicon), which ( in theory) provides higher brightness and lower power consumption. The screen has increased sensitivity and supports operation with gloves. This will be very useful as winter approaches. Visually, the display is really of very high quality, the colors are rich, and the viewing angles are maximum. Thanks to the absence of an air gap and a good reserve of brightness, the screen remains easily readable in the sun.

The picture remains visible from any angle, and the colors are not distorted. Multi-touch support up to 10 touches

The colorimeter showed that the screen is really quite good: maximum brightness 423.5 cd/m2, black field brightness 0.64 cd/m2 and contrast ratio 662:1. In the table below you can compare the performance with some competitors. As for color rendering, here, as usual, there is a bias towards cool colors, a predominance of blue shades.

The smartphone provides settings for color rendering modes:

After selecting the “warm” preset, color rendering improved, the predominance of blue and the ΔE error decreased:

Device nameWhite field brightness,

How is the smartphone doing with performance and autonomy?

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 platform with 3 GB of RAM demonstrates truly high performance, which is enough for all modern applications, games and smooth operation of the interface. Like all modern flagships (and not only), the smartphone gets hot under heavy loads. The game Asphalt 8 with advanced (by mobile standards) graphics starts with maximum graphics settings, does not slow down and you can see all the available graphic effects:

The smartphone is available in two versions: with 16 and 64 GB of internal memory with an eMMC5.0 interface, which ensures high-speed operation of the internal storage. We have a 16 GB model on review, a little more than 12 GB is available. Unfortunately, there is no slot for MicroSD. If you don’t play games and listen to music from an “Orthodox” separate player, then the 16 GB version is quite enough, otherwise 64 GB will be a more reasonable purchase

The GPS module works well: during a cold start, the smartphone needed 40 seconds to use information from 6 satellites and increase the positioning accuracy to 13 m:

The smartphone has a lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 3080 mAh. With Wi-Fi or mobile Internet always on, synchronization of all existing accounts, about 25 minutes of talking and an hour of reading per day, the smartphone can easily survive for two days (by the evening of the second day, about 25% of the charge remains). The figure is not bad, but far from a record. The AnTuTu tester produced some strangely high results, perhaps the software did not work quite correctly (the last screenshot in the gallery with benchmark results is below). The smartphone supports Quick Charge 2.0 technology, thanks to which it should charge up to 75% in 40 minutes. In practice, there was no desire to record the exact time. During the first hour, most of the battery is charged, then the process slows down. A full charge takes about 2 hours.

For those who want to know more

The smartphone provides the ability to select a performance mode, there is “productive” and “balanced”. You can select in the settings or when running benchmarks:

The aforementioned 2.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (8974AC) processor, Adreno 330 graphics and 3 GB of RAM really deliver strong performance. In AnTuTu, the smartphone scores 44382 points and outperforms HTC One (M8), Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z2. Benchmark results:

How user-friendly is the interface?

Xiaomi Mi4 runs on Android 4.4 OS with MIUI shell. Version 6 was announced along with the smartphone; it is still in the beta stage, but it already works very well. There is a stable working version 5. The MIUI 6 shell provides for downloading all applications to desktops (there are no restrictions on their number). The interface has a flat, minimalistic and beautiful design with an abundance of smooth and beautiful animations.

After turning it on and initial settings (language, Wi-Fi and gmail), the smartphone solemnly announced to me that it was pumping out new firmware over the air and would now update. I didn’t interfere, but after updating and rebooting I discovered the absence of the Russian language and Google services. In this regard, the creators turned out to be very humane: in 10 minutes the latest available version of MIUI 6 with the Russian language was found, downloaded and installed in a couple of clicks:

This is what the top curtain looks like. A horizontal swipe moves between notifications and toggles:

Notifications arrive in shortened form. In order to open it completely, use a gesture similar to the standard zoom gesture in the gallery:

The search is called up by swiping up on the screen:

The left button below the screen calls up the application manager. Here you can close all applications, it is possible to pin the necessary applications. This is done by moving the icon down. Repeated action removes the fixation:

Here is such a nice and beautiful standard weather application:

The smartphone produces surprisingly decent sound through the headphones, better than many of its competitors. The player has all the standard features, including an equalizer. There is an interesting option for customizing the headset. In fact, you can use absolutely any headset, and in the settings assign button actions, including long presses:

Miscellaneous benefits:

Despite the Beta status, the shell works smoothly; there are some glitches and flaws in localization. It's worth waiting for the final version.

How are things going with the camera?

The main camera has a resolution of 13 megapixels, the Sony Exmor RS IMX214 module is used, the optics have 6 lenses, f/1.8 aperture, and there is an LED flash. Supports HDR, 4K video and 120 fps slow motion mode with HD resolution. The front one is also Sony but 8 megapixels with a similar aperture. The interface is convenient and clear. Mode selection menu:

The main camera pleased me with the really high quality of the pictures, even in cloudy weather. Autofocus is fast, and color reproduction seems pretty close to real life. Below are examples of photos and videos:

Bottom line

Xiaomi has turned out to be a really solid, high-quality smartphone with almost top-end specifications and correspondingly high performance, which is enough for any applications and heavy games. The smartphone is well built and easy to use; the MIUI shell is interesting, smooth and flexible in customization. MIUI 6 is still really raw, but there are stable versions of MIUI 5 firmware, and the flashing process is as simplified as possible. In addition to this, the smartphone has a very high-quality camera that can do a lot. Now about the unpleasant moments: if the lack of NFC and dust and moisture protection are not critical, then the lack of a MicroSD slot (which is present in most modern flagships) is a more serious problem. It can be solved by having a 64 GB version, but the cost difference is significantly higher than the cost of a MicroSD card. Price: the 16 GB version is now selling for 6,600 UAH, while the 64 GB version is asking for 8,000 UAH (this is when the price for a 64 GB MicroSD memory card is around 500-600 UAH). The price of the smartphone is indeed lower than that of more famous competitors with similar characteristics, but the difference is not so big. If the brand itself doesn’t bother you, then buying the 16 GB version seems quite justified; 64 GB is worth waiting for the price to drop.

Xiaomi Mi 4i differs from the older model Mi 4 in having a plastic rather than metal body and a weaker processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 versus Snapdragon 801). But it has two slots for SIM cards and a thinner body combined with a more capacious (!) battery. In addition, this is the first Xiaomi smartphone to run Android 5.0 Lollipop. This alone is a reason to pay attention to it.

Since this is the first review of a Xiaomi smartphone on our portal, let’s say a few words about the company. It was founded quite recently, in 2010, and its first product is software: the MIUI interface for Android. But by the end of 2014, the company ranked third in the world in smartphone sales after Samsung and Apple. Price dumping, imitation of Apple (and in almost everything - from solutions in the MIUI interface to the corporate style of the head of the company Lei Jun) and really successful devices - and now the whole world is talking about the company from Shenzhen. And some even predict that it will in the near future become the main player in the smartphone market, while Apple and Samsung will bite the dust. At least, the growth rates hint at this.

Xiaomi began serious expansion outside of China last year with the involvement of former Google employee Hugo Barra, but it is doing so relatively slowly. In any case, in Russia, official sales of Xiaomi gadgets (and in the company’s assortment there is something to look at besides smartphones - even action cameras and sneakers!), with the exception of tablets, have not yet begun. So we are talking about a “gray” smartphone, without official support from the manufacturer - as is often the case with the “Chinese”.

Design and ergonomics

Despite all the gossip around the “Chinese Apple,” Xiaomi smartphones themselves are not too similar to the iPhone, and the Mi 4i is no exception. The modest and neat body is lined with matte plastic. To scratch or stain a smartphone, you need to try.

The colors are joyful: white, pink, blue, light green, but there is also a classic black version. We had white and it looks fresh.

Xiaomi Mi 4i in hand

Dimensions - 138.1 × 69.6 × 7.8 mm. The frames around the screen are small. The device is not too thin to be uncomfortable to hold, and not too thick to boast of an excellent figure - a diagonal of five inches is, perhaps, optimal at the moment, as it allows you to maintain a balance between screen size and ease of use with a smartphone. All this is complemented by a very good build - leave stories about low “Chinese quality” in history (even for very cheap gadgets). As a result, Xiaomi Mi 4i is a pleasure to deal with.

Front panel, under the screen, when pressed, three navigation keys are activated

The set of controls is standard: the power button along with the volume rocker is on the right edge, standard Android touch keys for moving through the menu are below the screen.

Above the screen there is an earpiece, a front camera lens, a light sensor and a status indicator. The main camera along with the flash was placed on the back panel in the corner. At the bottom there is a microUSB port and a microphone, at the top there is a 3.5 mm mini-jack for headphones, and on the left there is a slot for two microSIM cards.

The main speaker is located on the rear panel, so the smartphone lying on the table sounds muffled. But this is not a critical drawback.

User interface

A stylish and productive premium smartphone is Xiaomi Mi4. Reviews of this flagship device, its software and hardware, as well as capabilities will be described in detail further in the text.

Equipment

The Mi4 Xiaomi has a fairly decent level of equipment. Reviews only point to the lack of a stereo headset. The phone is rich in the following components and accessories:

  • Integrated battery (by the way, it is non-removable, but the body is collapsible).
  • Interface cord with USB and, of course, MicroUSB connectors.
  • A typical charger with a built-in plug and a USB output port.
  • A paper clip for installing a SIM card.

Design

In terms of design, there are certain similarities between the iPhone 5S and Xiaomi Mi4. Reviews from owners indicate this nuance of this gadget. The front panel of Mi4 is covered with impact-resistant glass. True, the manufacturer does not specify which one. The side faces are made of a smooth transition between the front cover and the ribs, as well as between the back cover and the sides. It is this design decision that indicates that the prototype of this smart phone was the iPhone 5S.

There is a 5-inch display on the front panel. On top of it is a camera for video calls and selfies. Next to it is a speaker for conversations and a number of sensors. Under the display there is a typical gadget control, which consists of 3 buttons. On the left side there is a slot for a SIM card. Physical locking of the device and volume control are located on the right edge.

On the top side of the smartphone there is a 3.5 mm wired port for connecting a stereo headset and on the bottom edge there is also a wired interface, a loud speaker and a conversational microphone. The rear cover houses the main camera along with an LED backlight system and a microphone to suppress external noise.

CPU and its capabilities

Of course, one of the most powerful chips is installed in Xiaomi Mi4. Reviews indicate a fantastic level of its performance. And you can’t expect anything else from the Snapdragon 801. Its second designation in accordance with the nomenclature of the developer company Qualcomm is MSM8974AC. This CPU consists of 4 high-performance computing modules, each of which is based on the Krait 400 architecture, a special version of the Cortex-A15. This semiconductor crystal is manufactured in accordance with the standards of the 28-nm technological process.

Each of its cores can operate at a frequency of 2.5 GHz if the maximum level of performance is required. The computing capabilities of this chip are more than enough to run any application. Moreover, several “heavy” programs can run on it at once, and there will definitely be no problems with stability and smoothness. Although the CPU itself was introduced quite a long time ago, even now its resources allow you to run any software without any problems. The only thing that may cause some criticism is the lack of support for 64-bit computing. But at the time of its release this issue was not so relevant. And even now there is no such software in large quantities. Developers are not so quick to convert their software to 64-bit computing. Therefore, this problem will certainly not be relevant in the next 2 years.

Graphics accelerator and screen

The Adreno 330 is used as a graphics accelerator in the Xiaomi Mi4 M4. Reviews highlight its good level of performance. Its computing capabilities are quite sufficient to solve any problem at the moment. And this will not change in the next 2 years. Customer reviews of the Xiaomi Mi4 indicate a high quality display. It is based on IPS technology, its resolution is 1920x1080 px. The absence of an air gap between the glass and the matrix eliminates the possibility of image distortion even at angles of 178 degrees. In general, the graphics adapter and screen in this smart phone do not cause any complaints. These are some of the best solutions in the premium smartphone segment.

Cameras

One of the best cameras today is installed in the Xiaomi Mi4 smartphone. Reviews will speak of the impeccable quality of her photos and videos. Its sensor is based on a 13 megapixel sensitive element that is quite modest today. But things like autofocus and optical image stabilization play a key role here. There are also many software features that allow you to configure the camera for shooting at any time of the day or night.

Regarding video recording, it can be noted that this device can do it in “4K” quality. In this price category, no device can boast of such a feature. The matrix is based on an 8 megapixel sensitive element. Its optics are designed so that the image coverage angle is close to 180 degrees. This allows you to use this device for selfies. Well, to make video calls, the specified technical specifications are more than enough.

Memory amount

This smartphone has no problems with the amount of RAM. It has 3 GB of RAM of the most common DDR3 standard today. This is enough to simultaneously run several resource-intensive applications. At the same time, this mode will not affect the operation of the device in any way; the interface will work smoothly. The capacity of the built-in storage can be 16 GB or 64 GB. There is no intermediate option of 32 GB in the manufacturer’s range.

If in the first case, under certain circumstances, there may be a lack of free space on the internal drive, then in the second there should be no problems at all. But an external flash drive cannot be installed in the Chinese smartphone Xiaomi Mi4. Reviews indicate the absence of a corresponding slot in this gadget. It is difficult to understand what the Chinese engineers were guided by when they abandoned this slot, but this is one of the most significant shortcomings of the device. As a kind of compensation, it can be noted that you can connect a regular flash drive to this device using an OTJ cable.

Autonomy

The Xiaomi Mi4 phone cannot boast of phenomenal autonomy compared to its competitors. Reviews indicate that one charge of the integrated 3000 mAh battery at an average load is enough for 1 day of operation. When the load decreases and battery life is saved, this value can be increased by 2 times - up to 2 days. But if you run some resource-intensive task (for example, “Asphalt 8”), then a full battery charge will only last for 3 hours. You can’t expect better performance from a smartphone with a 5-inch display diagonal, a 4-core high-performance CPU on board and a 3000 mAh battery.

Software

The not-so-typical Android version 4.4 is installed on the Xiaomi Mi 4. Customer reviews indicate the absence of a built-in program menu. That is, all the software that is installed on this device is displayed immediately on the desktop. The reason for this is the proprietary MIUI shell version 6. By the way, such a decision by Chinese programmers further indicates that the prototype of this smartphone was the iPhone 5S. After all, its operating system has a similar operating algorithm. Otherwise, the software set is quite modest; everything you need will have to be installed from the Play Market.

Communication set

Xiaomi Mi 4 has everything you need. Technical specifications and reviews indicate support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GSM and 3G networks, GPS and A-GPS. Among other features of the device, we can highlight an infrared port, which allows you to turn this smartphone into a remote control. Among wired methods of information exchange, MicroUSB and the usual 3.5 mm audio port are supported.

Results, reviews, strengths and weaknesses of the device

One of the best offerings in the high-end smartphone segment is Xiaomi's Mi4. Reviews indicate that it has virtually no flaws. The only thing that may cause some criticism is the lack of a slot for an external flash drive. But the capacity of the built-in memory should be sufficient.

In addition, you can connect a regular flash drive to this gadget or store your most valuable personal information on a cloud service. Separately, it is worth noting the cost of such a smartphone - $390. For a device of this class, this is a very modest indicator and the only drawback cited earlier does not seem so significant against this background.
