What to do if USB ports stop working after reinstalling Windows. Why USB ports do not work USB windows 7 do not work

How to install drivers on a laptop with Windows 7 operating system when the network controller does not work either!? What is the power of Notepad!?
Hi all!

A little backstory...

Just the other day I faced such a task, namely to install a transformer on a laptop Dell Inspirion 3147-9182 2-in-1(Touch panel) Windows 7. I got all my flash drives, disks and an external (usb) DVD-Rom as efficient. With a few manipulations in the BIOS, I installed boot from an external DVD-Roma. Po demolished all partitions of the hard drive and started installing Windows 7.

Important!!! (Just in case...) Before demolishing the partitions, I created a full backup copy of the entire system on a USB flash drive using the native Dell utility.

Windows was installed and then I realized with horror that the drivers for usb, network controller, and so on. didn't get up. Those. the laptop is completely cut off from the "outside world" and, accordingly, there is no built-in cd-rom and my usb DVD-Rom is not recognized in the OS. I thought and thought - I started to google, I came across a couple of tips, which in my case did not fit. One of them is to disassemble the laptop - remove the hard drive, connect it to another PC and add drivers. This option is good, but my laptop is completely new, especially not mine, and I did not dare to unwind it.

Then I remembered about the ERD commandera disks (which I had), inserting them one by one. different versions for different Axes, I tried to reach the installed Windows. Unfortunately not alone ERD Commander did not want to boot, they say there is no suitable installed windows. I tried to install the OS of another assembly, but also Windows 7 in the hope that the drivers will get up. Do you think it helped me? Of course not!

Then the thought came to me, I need to somehow upload the drivers to the installation disk, and then from it to the logical partition (for example, D) of the laptop.

I took the installation disk (necessarily from the version of Windows that is installed on the laptop) - downloaded it under the laptop from the office. dell driver site for network controller and wifi. Then I copied the necessary fresh drivers into the iso image of the installation disk. Only from the first time this installation disk refused to start on my laptop, I think because I placed the drivers in the root of the installation disk image. I again changed the iso image of the driver to the installation disk in this way: H:\efi\microsoft\boot\fonts

So the disk started loading.

Just be careful, we absolutely do not need a new installation, we need a NOTEBOOK. In order to open Notepad, you need to go to the installation disk window - where it will be written " System Restore» - « Choice of action» - « Diagnostics» - « Add. options" and finally " Command line". I tried for a long time to copy the folder with the drivers to the laptop via the command line. I didn’t succeed, because. drive names (letters) were assigned differently. And then a bright thought came - the command " notepad" (notebook). We go in notepad - file - open - the file type must be set to " All files"- go to your boot drive along the path (in my case) H:\efi\microsoft\boot\fonts, where H is the drive letter. We find the driver and one by one (because the system freezes) we copy the driver to the local disk D. Urrraaaa comrades.

I suffered for 4 days, until it dawned on me. I hope this article will help you, maybe there is a much easier way, and I'm sure of this, and you share it with us in the comments. Good luck to all!

Peripheral devices such as a mouse, keyboard, webcam, printer are usually connected to the computer via USB ports. In this case, it often happens that one or more ports stop working. That is, when connected to a computer, for example, a flash drive, it is not recognized, the keyboard or mouse may freeze, and the printer may not respond and print pages.

There are several likely reasons why some or all of the USB ports on your computer are not working. Let's try to understand this issue and find out what should be done to restore the normal functioning of the computer.

Checking the BIOS settings

The first thing you should pay attention to is the BIOS settings of the computer. You will need a working keyboard to enter the BIOS. If the keyboard is connected to the computer via USB and it does not work, then you need to connect a keyboard with a PS / 2 connector. Otherwise, you simply cannot do anything.

So, we go into the BIOS, for which, when starting the computer, you must press the enter key, usually it is DEL. There may be another key that is displayed on the screen and is listed in the motherboard manual. After entering the BIOS, find the section responsible for the integrated devices (Integrated Peripherals) or the "Advanced" section. Here you should find the subsection “Onboard Devices Configuration”. It is in it that the parameters responsible for the operation of USB controllers are located: USB Function or USB 2.0 Controller. These parameters must be enabled (Enabled). And if one of them is disabled (Disabled), then hover over it and press Enter, thereby enabling it. To prevent your changes from being reset, you must save them by pressing F10 and confirm the save by pressing the Y or Enter key.

After rebooting the computer, check if the USB ports are working. And if not, then you should look for the cause elsewhere.

USB ports on the front of the computer do not work

As a special case, USB only on the front panel may not work for you. In such a situation, it is necessary to check whether the necessary connectors on the motherboard are connected and whether the wires are damaged. To do this, open the side cover of the system unit and pay attention to the connector at the bottom of the motherboard. The board itself has the inscription USB1 or USB2, as well as on the block itself. The wires from the block go to the front panel, and if they are disconnected or broken in one place, then you have found the cause of the malfunction. Damaged wires should be connected or replaced. It will not be superfluous to check the contact in the connector on the motherboard. It is also worth paying attention to the board located on the front panel. Perhaps there is a short circuit, by the way, such a circuit can be triggered by accumulated dust. Therefore, be sure to clean the system unit from dust.

Problems with the device itself or the cable

The next source of USB problems can be the cable connected to, for example, a printer. This error is easy to identify and fix. We connect a USB flash drive to the checked connector. If it works, then we try to connect other known good equipment using a suspicious cable, for example, a USB hub. If it also refuses to work, then the reason is definitely in the cable and it should be replaced.

Power outages

There are situations when there is simply not enough power for all devices. For example, when connecting an external hard drive that uses two USB connectors at once, the printer or keyboard may turn off. In this case, the power of the power supply is not enough to provide energy to all consumers. In this case, the problem may not appear immediately, but after some time after turning on the computer. There are several ways out of the situation. If you have a low-power power supply installed, for example, 300 W, then it would be logical to change it to a more powerful one, 450-600 W. You can also use an active USB hub (with external power). It will allow not only to increase the number of connected USB devices, but also to power them from a separate power supply.

Another reason affecting USB performance is a dead CMOS battery. But at the same time, every time you turn on the computer, you will observe the system time and date that have gone astray. After replacing the battery, the problem goes away. But this is not common, so you should check other possible sources of malfunction.

Missing or incorrect installation of USB drivers

Causes related to software malfunctions in Windows 7/10 can be identified using the Device Manager. If you notice that one or more devices specifically do not work, regardless of the port used, then this may indicate that the problem is in the device itself. Open the Control Panel and go to the Device Manager section. All connected devices will be displayed there. If there are items in the list that have a yellow exclamation mark next to them or an Unknown device instead of a name, then the problem is in this device itself. There may be several possible problems here.

Often USB inputs stop working after reinstalling Windows 7/10. This is caused by improper installation of drivers, or the necessary drivers may not be found at all. You will have to select and install manually.

Often, to fix a problem, you just need to update the drivers. So, if automatic Windows updates are disabled, and the system itself was installed a long time ago, then the relevance of the software is lost, system errors may appear. At the same time, the device starts to work incorrectly, or even stops functioning altogether. To update (reinstall) the USB controller drivers, you can use the motherboard driver CD/DVD or download the required drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's website.

You can also turn off the power saving feature for all ports using the Device Manager. Expand the list of used USB devices hidden in the USB controllers, Mouse and other pointing devices, Keyboards sections. Double-click on the desired device to open the properties window. Now switch to the "Power Management" tab and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Thus, the device will be activated always and under any circumstances.

If some equipment is not recognized, then there may be a problem with the drivers already known to us, as well as a hardware problem, consisting in a lack of contact, cable damage, or a controller malfunction. Moreover, it often happens that when a faulty device is connected, the rest stop working normally. The keyboard starts to freeze, as does the mouse, and the printer stops printing. The problem is similar to a lack of power, that is, the consumption of all power goes to a faulty device, which may have an ordinary short circuit or other malfunction.

USB ports not working due to damaged controller

If none of the above actions helped restore the USB ports, then you should check the motherboard USB controller, which could have failed. In this case, high-quality repairs and diagnostics should be entrusted to the specialists of the service center. As a way out of the problem, try installing an expansion board, the so-called USB PC controller, which is installed in the PCI slot on the motherboard. This solution is much cheaper than repairing the USB controller of the motherboard, and when using an additional USB hub, the problem with the lack of ports will not be relevant at all.

As you can see, finding and fixing problems with USB ports is a rather troublesome business, and all because there can be a lot of reasons. Consistently finding and eliminating obviously wrong paths will allow you to identify and fix the problem.

On some computers, when you plug in a hard drive or USB 3.0 flash drive, you get the error "Device not recognized" (USB Device Not Recognized) or " Windows stopped this device because it reported problems.(Code 43)" in Device Manager.

In this article, you will find instructions for troubleshooting the following issues:

  • USB device not recognized/not detected
  • USB 3.0 flash drive not recognized/not detected
  • USB 3.0 not working on Windows 7/10

How to fix: USB 3.0 port not working on computer

Before we move on to troubleshoot this issue, you should try the following:

  1. Use a different USB cable if you are connecting the hard drive to a USB 3.0 port on your computer.
  2. Connect USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 port.
  3. Remove the USB device, turn off the computer, and unplug the power cord (or battery if you're using a laptop). Wait at least 2 minutes, and then reconnect the power cord. Turn on the computer and reconnect the USB device.
  4. If you are using Windows 7, Vista, or XP, download and run the Microsoft Troubleshooter utility.
  5. Reset BIOS to factory settings.

Solution 1 – Disable Fast Startup Feature in Windows 8 and 10

  7. When the driver scan is complete, click " Download", to download the latest drivers for your computer.
  8. Finally, click " Install".
  9. After installation is complete reload computer.

Solution 5 – Restore Windows to a previous working state

If the solutions above did not help with the problem when USB 3.0 does not work on the computer, you should try restoring the computer to a previous working state. This can be done if you have activated a Windows restore point earlier.

Please write in the comments below if you managed to solve the problem with a faulty USB 3.0 port, and what solution worked in your situation.

In order for the user to be able to quickly navigate the malfunctions of the controller, I will conduct a short digression into the terminology of this issue.

USB (u-es-bi, English Universal Serial Bus) is a universal serial bus for connecting peripheral devices to a computer via a four-wire cable. Using this technology, it is possible to connect devices without their own (autonomous) power supply only due to the power supplied through this bus. These devices are familiar to everyone - external hard drives, USB flash drives, adapters, etc.

Until recently, USB 2.0 was predominantly installed on devices. The less fast and powerful USB 2.0 is gradually being replaced by USB 3.0 with a data transfer rate of up to 5 Gb / s (up to 5 Gigabit / s) and power supply through the bus up to 1 A (1 Ampere). Recently, the USB 3.1 standard has been introduced - progress cannot be stopped.

USB 3.0 support is not available by default on all operating systems

In new laptops, USB 3.0 connectors are painted blue, while USB 2.0 remains black. A perceptive and quick-witted user could almost immediately assume that the problem lies precisely in the new USB 3.0 standard, which has not yet been fully implemented at the software level. Those. USB 3.0 hardware is already implemented in the laptop, but the software (driver) is not yet available.

Therefore, it is now possible to answer the main question of this article: Why USB does not work in a laptop after reinstallation?". “Because there are no drivers for USB 3.0 ports in the Windows operating system!”.

Which Windows OS won't work USB 3.0

This problem is typical for Windows XP and Windows 7 operating systems. But in Windows 8 and Windows 10, this problem practically does not occur. The reason is simple: USB 3.0 began to be massively introduced after the release of Windows XP and Windows 7. But if in Windows XP the problem of non-working USB ports does not resolve itself, then in Windows 7 you can try to solve the problem simply by turning on automatic updates for Windows. The system itself, by the device ID (USB 3.0 controller ID), will recognize and install the driver, provided that the brand of the controller and the manufacturer are "known" to Windows 7.

And if these are not USB drivers? ...

It happens that a problem with USB ports is a symptom of a more complex and unpleasant breakdown. For example, this can serve as a signal for the failure of the laptop motherboard chipset. More specifically, the breakdown of the south bridge. After all, it is the south bridge (I / O Controller Hub) of the laptop motherboard that is responsible for the peripherals - USB, SATA (IDE), Audio, PCI, Ithernet. Occurs due to: overheating, short circuit on the board, problems with power supply, mechanical impact.

A simple test will help to check the hypothesis about the failure of the chipset: you need to select the USB ports on the laptop that are colored black, i.e. USB 2.0, and check their performance. If USB 2.0 works, but USB 3.0 does not, then the only problem is with the drivers.

How do I fix a problem with USB 3.0 drivers?

For example, you installed Windows 7, and USB 3.0 did not work even after installing all the updates (drivers) from the MicroSoft website. Then there are two ways out: either install Windows 8/10 and at least USB 3.0 will most likely work right away, or you will have to look for drivers for the USB controller that is installed in your laptop. You will have to do this on the Internet, so you will need high-speed Internet access.

Where to find drivers for USB 3.0 (3 sources for)

  • Go to the manufacturer's website and find the right driver through the search on the site. Here you will need a little experience: you need to know first of all what to download (it does not make sense to install all the drivers in a row); you need to know the exact brand of the laptop (name and alphanumeric index); bitness of the operating system Windows 32 or 64 bit;
  • Download any driver pack and install all drivers using it. For example from here - https://drp.su/ru/download.htm ;
  • Go to this site https://devid.drp.su/?l=ru (click the link below - I'm looking for a driver with my hands) or this https://devid.info/ru and find, download and install the necessary device by device ID driver

The first method from the entire list is the most preferable and, possibly, easy, if everything is clear on the laptop manufacturer's website and you have fast Internet. But sometimes you can find a whole list of USB drivers for one device and no hint of which of these files to download and install. Therefore, the second item with the driver pack can sometimes help much faster - if the Internet is fast (you have to download several gigabytes of software). At the same time, you will have drivers for all occasions for a computer, laptop, netbook.

If there is no fast Internet, then it is best to clean (with format the C :) drive Windows installation after some preparation, i.e. creating a backup (backup copy) of files and drivers. Otherwise, you may find yourself in a situation where it is not possible to download drivers, since the network interfaces in the laptop do not work, and it is not possible to copy the driver pack from a USB flash drive (external drive), since the device is all USB 3.0 - and they do not work.

Many of our readers have asked for an explanation Why are the USB ports not working? and also why the error pops up " Error. USB device not recognized". Finally, I found the time to write this long-awaited article. USB ports are not always the cause of a connected device not working.

Very often, the external device itself fails, which is why an error pops up about a faulty USB port. Before moving on to the next steps, make sure the USB device you want to connect is working (check with a friend or on another computer). If you are sure that your device works, then this article is for you.

Causes of the problem

They can be completely different, but you need to find out the exact reason due to which USB ports not working.

  • If the above methods did not help and still USB ports not working, try to go to "Device Manager" and check the "Controllers" section for devices with a yellow exclamation mark. If present, double-click on the device and read the reason for that error.

  • Perhaps the USB ports are not working due to incorrectly installed drivers or their complete absence. The article will help you deal with this.
  • It is possible that USB ports not working due to the usual ones, but by installing and scanning the computer, we can find and
